The Deer Hunter is a terrible movie.

Unbelievably, mind-numbingly boring movie. How did the puke directing this conclude that this is a 3+ hour long story? I feel like that shitty wedding scene took 45 minutes, I felt like I was having to sit through an actual mass in the middle of a movie. Sure, there was solid acting, but the characters were all as deep as a drool puddle.
Scenes like when the guy takes a leak and his buddies kept driving off pissed me off so much- it's like the director was constantly finding ways to bore the shite out of the audience with interminably prolonged scenes that add absolutely nothing to the story or characters, to saty nothing of the audience's experience.
Walken gave a pedestrian performance, don't see what the fuss was about his outting. Ditto that for Streep. Deniro and Cazale gave the best performances, third would be the VC dude who keeps slapping the POWs til they play roulette- at least he was interested in moving shite along.
This was such an obnoxious movie. I will never understand how it maintains revered status.

didn't deniro actually jump from that bridge for the filming?

Idk but I remember when watching thinking he might have due to how it was filmed, that's at least impressive if true- forget if it was the bridge or helicopter

Everything before Vietnam could be half as long but the rest is good.

You should give that game they played with the revolver a whirl

Omg that's hilarious. Your biting, acerbic wit is not going unappreciated champion

Yeah, I was with Cazale on that... What the frick kind of faux intellectual bs was that? That scene sums up the whole movie, it was so hamfisted and tried so hard to seem like a "classic" moment

There was Vietnam stuff in this movie?
Every time I've tried to watch it I have to turn it off out of boredom around this point in the movie

The film is a masterpiece. Yes, the wedding scene is too long, but if you want to see a film that actually reflects your statements, then watch Heaven's Gate - also by Cimino. It's far too meandering and self-indulgent.
The Deer Hunter, on the other hand, is one of the greatest movies ever made. What you may see as pointless scenes are actually character development and beautifully staged set pieces with superb acting.

Fairly overrated film, Never was much of a Cimino fan.
John Cazale trivia:
John Cazale trivia:
quote:
While Cazale never earned an Oscar nomination himself, his films fared significantly better; every feature film in which he appeared received a nomination for best picture. Three of his films, The Godfather, The Godfather: Part II, and The Deer Hunter took home the top prize. The other two films Cazale made during his life, The Conversation and Dog Day Afternoon, both got nominations but didn't win. Here's the real kicker, though: The Godfather: Part III, which didn't come out until 12 years after Cazale's 1978 death, featured archival footage of Cazale in the Fredo Corleone role. It got a best picture nod, too.

You're wrong. Not just a difference of opinion - you're actually wrong.
