Really makes me rethink the whole healthy living = long life. That behemoth makes it 7 decades and Steve Prefontaine has to check out after barely two

Didn't he die in a car wreck?

My grandfather never skipped a day drinking bourbon or smoking a pipe except for weekdays during lent from the day he came back from WWII fighting the Japs until the day he had a stroke at age 88. He died a year later at 89 (2 years ago). Never worked out except for walking and never took prescription meds until the stroke.
It is all genetics. You either have it or you don't. Your life style only really tips it a few years in either direction unless you do heavy drugs.

It certainly helps. Anecdotes and outliers aren't a good reason to rethink anything in themselves. But the more important issue isn't length, it's quality. You notice how the announcement obliquely references the pain she was in? Healthy lifestyles go a long way toward healthier and happier old age. Nothing is guaranteed, but some things sure as frick help. You only get one life -- don't let something like this lead you to choices you can't take back.
