It's probably more a rural/urban difference than a North/South one. A few of my friends here in Birmingham are astounded something like this, and people like that, reside 20 minutes outside of town. These are people that have lived their entire life in Alabama, though mostly in Birmingham.

And maybe it's just because I've been drawn to eccentric personalities my whole life, but John B didn't seem all that unusual to me. I've met dozens of people like him in this state. The story is still fascinating and entertaining, but I'm only through 3 episodes. I've heard it kind of loses its appeal in the coming episodes.
