your premise is dumb, we're better off rolling the dice on a rookie at #32 because he's cheaper.
We know Butler can play and play well in this league. He's not simply a product of the pats D, the guy excels in man coverage. Sure we have to pay a premium for him but our window is closing anyway, we don't have time to wait on a CB to potentially develop. Where would you rather spend the cash right now?

exactly
we have the cap room now to make the move and MAYBE have a 3-year window (probably more like 1-2)
his salary is irrelevant in the big picture b/c when Brees goes, we're done (and we can afford it now)
