1986 LSU seeded #11
Beat
#1 Kentucky
#2 Georgia Tech
#3 Memphis St.
#6 Purdue
To make the final 4.
Kentucky was odds on favorite to win it all that year and had beat LSU 3 times that season.
Memphis St. was a dark horse pick to win it all, they were loaded top to bottom.
Gene's team would in todays game be a final four type team.
86 may have been Georgia Tech's best team ever.

I was there for the wins against Purdue and Memphis State in 1986. The 1st round that year was held at LSU and the place was rocking for those two wins.
Should have been 2 straight Final Fours as we got to the Elite 8 in 1987 by beating #7 GT, #2 Temple and #3 DePaul. Damn Indiana and Bobby Knight.

And that's a big reason why the NCAA moved the opening round to neutral sites shortly there after.
That LSU team got on a roll and was a great story. But I don't see them getting out of the first weekend without the advantage of playing in front of a raucous home crowd in their own gym
