Help with flights

Dtr is attending a convention 3 months from now.
LFT - MCO would be our preference for convenience AND family can drop us/pick us up so no parking fees. MSY is an option but for convenience LFT is our choice.
What is your "worth it" amount of savings for the drive of 2.5 hrs to MSY. Tickets are cheaper there but the drive ... ugh even though it's "easy" it's far.
Am I looking too far out time wise? Looking to leave 6/26 or 27 at latest.

$178 on delta or frontier to leave out of nola versus $334 to leave from lafayette. Is the 2.5 hours including the way there and back? That's a pretty big price difference
Posted on 3/23/17 at 9:37 am to tiger91
The price is a judgment call on your part. If I need to travel with a definite timeline MSY (firm work appointments or personal travel); if it is a standard business trip (I will be in sometime on XXXday) I will fly LFT just for convenience.
LFT is basically a crap shoot with limited options for getting out should flights back up. MSY leaves you with different options should problem arise.

2.5 hours is one way.
OP, how long is your daughter going to be in Orlando?

If this is the case I'd just pay the extra $140 and not worry about the drive. My limit is roughly an hour drive to save $100, anything more than that it's not worth it vs the convenience of a smaller airport close to home with no security line...

Yes it's 2.5 hours each way.
She HAS to be there on Wednesday - Sunday until noon. Thought we'd go on Monday to give her Monday afternoon/evening and Wednesday at the parks but Monday is a pricey day to fly and Lord coming home on Sunday is expensive. If we're gonna go we just as soon spend some time at the parks.
It's a convention that she will be participating in a national speech contest representing her school yet they pay the $25 registration and that's it. It's not gonna be cheap but I'm glad we can do it BUT that doesn't mean that I don't want to consider costs.
Am I still in "the window" or any thoughts on if these prices are the best I'm going to get? And Cuse I realize convenience is expensive ... I do know that Spirit isn't an option. Frontier I'm not sure about -- just don't know much about them. Typically we always fly Delta -- those prices out of MSY are no better than LFT. Guess I need to look at other carriers.
Thanks.

Parking is ~$15 a day at MSY
if your trip is 7 days $15*7 = $105
I get reimbursed $.53 a mile LFT-MSY ~150mi x2 = 300 miles
.53x300 = $159 round trip
Using previous posters flight cost.
MSY = $178+159+105 = $442
LFT = $334
Just off cost, looks like LFT would be a better option.

Cuse what dates was that Delta price for? I'm good either departure date but July 2 (Sunday) I think will be an issue.
Leaving Monday - Sunday tickets are more than $500 each. That's nuts. I didn't pay that much to go to NYC.
Tuesday - Sunday tickets are still $510 even with an economy ticket for the LFT-MCO.
It's the Sunday departure that has to be midafternoon or later that is throwing it off. Staying until Monday isn't really an option for our schedules either.
Thanks for the help.

Ok this limits the flight time options. Coming back on Sunday afternoon/evening is looking to be extremely expensive flying back into LFT. If she can wait until Monday morning (July 3rd) to fly back it's $336 roundtrip total. If you try to come back on sunday night it jumps up to $515.
Tuesday morning - Monday morning
$462 for Tuesday morning- Sunday evening out of Laffy
The only benefit to flying in and out of New Orleans is that on southwest they have nonstop flights and better timing. Southwest looks like it's $101 on the way there and $126 for a 6:40pm-7:20pm MCO-New Orleans flight on Sunday night July 2nd. Total is $227 if you do Nola-Orlando
If you can do baton rouge- orlando, it's $288 for Monday afternoon - Sunday night. Not sure how far Baton Rouge is vs New Orleans for you

Thanks a bunch ... I shouldn't expect those prices to change much for Sunday should I? And I thought about an early morning flight on Monday but then I have to have an extra hotel night so I guess technically it may be a wash.
Truly appreciate the help. This great kid I have is costing me an arm and a leg ... hoping these activities and honors and awards pay off when she gets into college. AND I wish the school would pay for at least one or two hotel nights! Oh well.

I wouldn't expect the sunday night prices to change at all, especially since it's the sunday before the 4th of july. A lot of people are probably taking that Monday/Tuesday off and traveling. I'd stick with southwest out of New Orleans for this trip unfortunately, can book either Monday afternoon/evening or anytime Tuesday at roughly the same price ($99 on Tuesday versus $111 on Monday).

That's what I figured. Thanks a bunch ... truly truly appreciate the help.
For once will let the hubby decide. I know that he won't necessarily be able to bring us there/pick us up but I know that he won't won't me driving there super early (ie dark) or super late.
Have a great day and weekend.

One last question ... looking out of BR just because.
ECONOMY FAIR .. I understand that you don't get a seat assignment until after you check in with Delta (if we go that route) BUT does that mean you aren't guaranteed a seat?? I'm thinking YES.

Have you thought about doing two one-way tickets? Flying Lafayette-Orlando and then picking her up on Sunday night from New Orleans? This way you only have to drive to Nola one time instead of both?
One way laffy-orlando Price is $166 on Delta
LINK
On the way back, Southwest is $126 sunday night so grand total of $292. If your daughter isn't driving to the airport and parking, then this may be your best option

She's 16 ... I'll be going with her.
And I had thought about 2 one way tickets. I'll look again .. but it'd be easiest for my people if we depart/return to the same airport.

You are guaranteed a seat, it's just they assign it after check-in so if you check-in right at the 24hour mark you should be okay. Just don't plan on making any changes to the ticket because you are not allowed under this fare. If they did give away your seat you are entitled to Involuntary Denied Boarding (IDB) $$.
Edit: Ah if you are flying with her then do new orleans, the cost of two tickets will be much cheaper out of nola than laffy in this scenario

Cuse the Southwest prices are awesome ... any idea how often those change??? Is it a "book it when you see what you want" kind of thing??

They change pretty much weekly so if you think the $227 is a good price for each of you I'd book it. With southwest the benefit is that if you see the price go down, you can reprice your exact same itinerary and get a credit.
Example: Your flights are $101 on the way there and $126 on the way back as of current. Next week let's say you are looking and your exact same flights are now $75 on the way there and $126 on the way back. You can reprice your itinerary and get a credit for $26 each to be used within a year of your original booking date. Southwest has one of the best booking systems in the US to help you save money

Oh you can???? That's awesome. The departure flight I chose was $111 ... don't see 101 currently. And yes to the $126 return. Both direct.
Do they change always UPWARD as time draws near or is there fluctuation??
Originally my husband said just book LFT. Just texted him the price difference and he's pretty much speechless. Even $125 to park and $30/40 in actual gas (not mileage) isn't bad when added to the tickets.
