Michael Shannon has emerged as the frontrunner for the much-buzzed about Deadpool 2 role of Cable opposite Ryan Reynolds, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Sources say that Shannon isn't the only one on the studio’s list but is leading the pack as the top choice at this stage. Stranger Things actor David Harbour is also on the shortlist. Kyle Chandler's name surfaced last summer but sources say he was never in contention for the role.

Him and Will Smith would make awesome villains FWIW. I wouldn't mind seeing them get their asses kicked.

ETA: David Harbour can get f*cked too.

This sounds terrible. Cable is a big/loud personality and I don't think Michael Shannon is anywhere near that type of actor.

ETA: Sorry, Gambit and Cable were my favorite X-Men characters growing up. The movies haven't been good to Gambit and it doesn't look like Cable is gonna get great treatment either.

Cable is a grumpy, serious character.

Was the absolute saving grace of Man of Steel. If you watch it with him as that hero, and Superman as the villain it's really not a bad movie and one of the few that had the balls to kill the protagonist and main good guy.

Cable isn't loud. He's big, but he's pretty quiet until it's time to kick arse. I still think Ron Perlman or the flat-topped bad guy from Avatar should be the front runners.

Google Michael Shannon funny or die, one of the greatest they've produced.

Point is, he's got some comedy chops, especially playing the straight man as would be a Cable part.

I wouldn't go that far, but he was a VERY sympathetic figure if you realized his motivations (and, the fact, that he was essentially "bred" to be that way).

Stephen Lange... But he's gotta be 60+ by now. Gotta have somebody who's huge, around 45 or 50, a bit wethered, deep voice, and absolutely jacked.

Honestly, I don't know who that could be in today's Hollywood... If Shannon could get on massive massive amounts of hgh for about a year, he might work.

Aside from his absolutely insane politics, I've come to like him as an actor.

Cable is a bit like Wolverine in that they're upbringing going and surroundings made them hardened, and deep charcters. I really hope Marvel doesn't abandon the whole time-travel/Apocalypse aspect of his background. It makes him a much cooler character.

But, they'll probably frick it up. I also don't know if Deadpool's parent company have the rights to x-men characters such as Apocalypse.

If they're going to be faithful to Rob Liefeld's vision, they need an actor with gigantic thighs and tiny feet.

I hope you're joking. Deadpool is considered an X-Men character whose rights are owned by Fox.
