As we can see with basketball, an early signing period, or at least a signing period that happens before December, is a bad idea. Pretty much 80% of basketball signees sign in the fall. By the time all the season finishes and coaching changes take place, the cupboard is bare for any incoming coach, and his old team is stuck with a bunch of kids that may not want to be there anymore and are looking to get out of their LOI. This same thing would happen with football. I hope they keep the signing period after the season is over in football.

It wouldn't be mandatory.

It's not mandatory for basketball either, but the majority of kids sign the first chance they get because (a) they want to lock up their spot and (b) it's before their season really starts up in high school, so they can get the whole thing over with and focus on their senior season. The problem is the fall signing period is almost 6 months before the spring signing period. You always have coaching turnover and a bunch of kids stuck with a school they don't want to play for and trying to get out of their LOI, which isn't guaranteed. I kinda wish they would do like football, and make basketball signees sign after the season is over.
