Only reasoning behind thinking this is that was the original deal reported. All of it has played out just like that except for Butler and #42
The Saints can't even give them #42 unless N.E. does a sign-and-trade. If they have a first round tender on Butler I can't imagine they'd settle for #42. Although it's only a 10-spot drop.

Just curious, but does anyone know what Butler makes if no one offers him a contract and he has to stay in NE?

Don't hold me to this, but I think I remember seeing $3.91 million.

That's the only way this gets done. Saint's are signing him to an offer sheet. Either he signs his tender and gets traded or signs the long term deal and gets traded. It won't happen for #11. This happened a few years ago with Chris Ivory

We had a second round tender on him but traded him for a 4th. He signed his second round tender then got traded for a 4th and signed a new contract with the Jets.

It isn't uncommon in the NFL for this to happen. I don't get why everyone thinks it's going to be different this time

If we signed him to an offer sheet the Pats could match or get pick 11.

That isn't going to happen. We are going to work out a deal with Butler, then he will sign his tender and the Pats will trade him to us for a lesser amount, likely either 32 (which seems to be the case from insiders) or 42.

The end.

right. The Saints don't hold all the cards.

Similarly, Butler can't demand the Patriots trade him or give him a long term deal. As a restricted Free Agent, he faces two real choices...play under market value this year (for about 4M) and enter Free Agency next year, or convince NE or someone else to give him a long term deal now (probably at a discount as compared to what he'd get if he was an unrestricted FA). So, Butler doesn't hold all of the cards.

Meanwhile, if the Patriots don't trade Butler this year, they run the risk of him playing out his contract and them getting nothing next year. So, the Patriots don't hold all of the cards

I think it's reasonable to expect that a deal could be made between the Patriots and a team that is willing to give Butler a long term deal that he'd agree to for less than a first round pick.

Personally, I think even 2nd round pick is a lot of compensation for a guy that the Patriots don't have under contract. I'd feel a lot better with a 3rd...but the tea leaves seem to point to a 2nd.
