I do not think Pudge is better...
I think that Pudge was a great defensive catcher but I also do not think he was better than young Benito Santiago (overall career yes), Yadi, or Bench.

I think Grandal is one of the most underrated players in baseball in part due to his abysmal average. But he walks, hits for power and is an excellent pitch framer. He is a top 5 catcher to me.

He isn't near the top based on reputation so far, though.

I disagree. I think he's correctly rated. His numbers are relatively middling, yet people recognize his tools and potential so they elevate him beyond what he has shown thus far.

Grandal always seems so streaky and it seems like he's been around forever but he's only 28. His numbers in the second half last year were excellent. He might have the most raw power of any everyday catcher outside of Sanchez
If he puts it all together over the course of a full year he will be up there with Posey

Also Yadi is not now defensively what he was several years ago. I realize you're just saying this stuff to be edgy though so I'll stop

Lots of power, no doubt.

.800 OPS and 27 bombs from an above average defensive catcher is middling?

No I am not I am saying it because it is my opinion. I am sorry I am not trying to be net cool like you and have a differing opinion.

It was far and away the best year he's had at the plate. Right now it's an outlier

Last year he had a 122 wRC+ and was the second most valuable pitch framer in baseball (slightly behind Posey). That's not middling to me.

I would take Posey first, although he'll probably be spending more time at 1B. I really like LuCroy as well, but Molina is just so good.

You're cherry picking two categories from one year. That's fine, but you have to acknowledge that a more holistic look at his entire body of work doesn't tell that kind of story. It should be noted that he wasn't even a qualifier at Catcher last year based on his playing time. Very interesting player, though.

His wRC+ last year was 122. Career is 119.

The answers in this thread will be heavily fantasy driven. You can't measure Molina's intangibles.

Reputation as used there means the reputation he's earned by his play thus far in his career.

What was it before last year?

He can hit, his defense is getting better and he is pretty good at controlling the running game.
