damn, kids today. i guess you didn't grow up in the 80s/90s

Urban Dictionary
quote:

An internet chat language variety/version of the word "owned", used in the sence of beating/defeating/outclassing someone. Usually used in games such as Counter-strike or on messageboards when a user posts arguments or insults that can't possibly be counter-argued.

Arguably considered so-called "l33t-speak"
"I pwnd you that round" "You just got pwnd dude" "I am going to pwn you like I did your mother last night"

kind of like how 'teh' is popular

it started by people typing really fast on counter-strike (iirc) mis-typing "owned" and they would type "pwned", so it became a big meme

The exact history behind this is partially lost in internet lore. Its pointless to think into it too much.

Scholars believe it originated many, many ages ago in a duel between a single Korean World of Warcraft player and a team of 4 english speaking players who had voice chat on. The Korean, whose name is also lost to the waves of time, completely annihilated his opponent with a +10 Sword of Destiny and, whilst teabagging the unfortunate fallen soldiers, yelled, "F*%#ing Owned!" which of course sounded like "Phucking Owned". As languages do, they change over the eons and by 2005, it had become "PWND"

The rest, as they say, is history.
