How does this work?
Wouldn't we have known what his salary was long ago since his 2nd year is over?
Or am I completely missing something here?

Giving him the ole good faith raise, like the Angels did with Trout.

First three years is team control so and guys typically make the minimum plus a little bit each year forward. The minimum is like 500,000 but they have Kris 650,000 last year and a million this year. Lot more than they had to but better to keep him happy

He is not eligible for salary abitration until after this season. Technically he could make the minimum of $537K or slightly over that again this year. The Cubs are making a smart business move by paying him much more than that, and no doubt hope they can sign him to a long term deal before he is eligible for Free Agency.

I guess my question is, don't we know what his salary will be before year 2 starts?
Obviously i'm probably wrong somewhere in here, just don't know where.

Ordinarily, you can pretty much bet that a second year guy will likely make the league minimum. However, if he is a guy that is tremendously important to the franchise (guys like Bryant, Harper, Trout), the club can opt to raise the salary from year to year until the player is eligible for arbitration after year three

But this was his second season? Do they mean he will make the most money for a pre arb guy this upcoming 3rd year?

Remember the time the Astros drafted Mark Appel over Bryant? Good times. You're welcome Cubs.

You asked:
Yes he did.

My point is did we know his 2nd year salary was $1.05 million? If yes, what's with the timing of this, why didn't we see this article before last season even started?
You still never answered my question, fwiw even with all the quotes. I read through them again, even the last quote does not tell me WHEN the club opts to raise the salary. The logical assumption would be BEFORE the season, no? Again, not saying that is so, i'm just saying I know a bit about MLB contracts but not all the ins and outs, it would not be a logical assumption for me to make that they'd raise his salary for his 2nd season not until his 3rd season is about to begin, long after that 2nd season.

Okay now I get what you are asking. The club is raising his salary for this season. He is under contract for this season at $1.05 million.
Posted on 3/9/17 at 6:45 pm to BobCoot
I'm guessing he makes more than that in endorsements?
Posted on 3/9/17 at 6:47 pm to shel311
Fwiw, Trout's 1-year deal that Bryant just surpassed was agreed upon in Feb 2014, two months prior to the start of his 3rd season

He does pretty well off the field. Express, Red Bull, and Adidas are a few of his endorsements

So the salary is actually for his 3rd season, I think the thread title cause my confusion.

That was service time I believe. He well surpassed the rookie limit in 2015
