So if I tell people I care then we both care about the same amount?

If you took the time to educate yourself on the issue, then sure.

Slavery was a part of our culture for a long time.

Educate myself on the fact that Africa, in general, is in poor shape.
Done.
We both care.

Wow...
Maybe figure out why it is in such poor shape. You know...because of imperialism and how the governments were set up post colonial era.

I know why. The why in this case does nothing for those people now. Just like you and me do nothing for them but we "care".

i think that's the primary issue

it also has a lot to do with culture
the Africa countries that adopted more Western-style beliefs (esp economically) have emerged as success stories. the ones who devolved into tribalism or developed socialist-style economies have faltered.
culture, esp economic culture, matters. the colonial powers were dicks, but they instilled values (directly and indirectly) that gave the African countries the keys to post-colonial prosperity.

You realize that has a lot to do with who colonized them right? The former French colonies are a lot better off than the British. French colonialism was about assimilation. You became French. British colonialism was about taking as much from the colonies as possible. They didn't give a frick about their society.

a lot of it had to do with who they allied with post-colonialism during the Cold War
the same thing applies to the ME. we only installed the Shah to keep the USSR from "colonizing" Iran and having influence in the ME
we pay for that sin to this day, but nobody can argue the world (or Iran) would have been better off had it become the Cuba of the ME

So we tried to set up democracy all over Africa. In several cases, when a country's people elected socialist or communist leaders, the CIA stepped in and went "Oh man...y'all voted wrong...let us come in and fix it for you."
Our ideals about freedom were not carried out well at all in the 2nd half of the 20th century. After the Truman Doctrine was signed, we became the anti-communism police force which has since transitioned into the anti-terrorism police force. For that reason, frick Truman.

Osama bin laden is an EXCELLENT example of how a member of the aristocracy can get poor people to do their bidding....if it weren't for massive poverty in the middle east he wouldn't have had an army...why did he have to travel to Afghanistan and couldn't have gotten enough folks to form an army in Saudi Arabia??? because poverty isn't as great....
If all you needed to create an army of terrorists was an impoverished population then someone would have gone to India and raised an army by now.
They have 240 million people living in poverty. That's more people in poverty than populations of Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, United Arab Emirates, Yemen and Afghanistan COMBINED.
Instead recruiting the poors in India, the terrorists recruit in the country next to India, Pakistan. A country with similar poverty rates, same colonial background, but one major cultural difference.

what reason do any Republicans have to blindly hate Muslims? Is all hatred blind? I guess, maybe. Can any of dislike of Muslims be justified? For reasons discussed here, like oppression of human rights? is that justified?

Oppression is part of their culture? and that's ok?
Posted on 3/3/17 at 12:56 pm to Hooligan's Ghost
That depends. Do women in that culture feel they are being oppressed? If so, no it is not okay. If they are fine with it, then leave them be.

So it's voluntary, but if they don't go along with it they are ostracized, punished, abused, killed?
ok sure
