The Trump administration supports renewing without reforms a key surveillance law governing how the U.S. government collects electronic communications that is due to expire at the end of the year, a White House official said on Wednesday.
quote:
The law, known as the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), has been criticized by privacy and civil liberties advocates as allowing broad, intrusive spying. It gained renewed attention following the 2013 disclosures by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.
quote:
Though FISA is intended to govern spy programs intended for foreigners, an unknown amount of communications belonging to Americans are also collected due to a range of technical and practical reasons.

I'm not in love with it, but I'm afraid it's a necessity in this age.

But with no revision at all? Appears like pure laziness

you like the Patriot Act too, do you?
no right to an attorney
no right to be even charged with a crime
no right to a trial
no right to cross examine witnesses
and now, no right to privacy, because heck, its just so hard to keep from capturing all the data in the universe so your stuff is in there too.
USA now employs 200,000 intelligence analysts.

The agencies were on their own.

And repubs had an opportunity to remove it or revise it but chose not to. This isn't a right vs left thing. It's about the government overextending its reach into our lives

I don't like it at all. But why is it every POTUS is all in for this upon arrival? There must be a reason...

Exactly. I'm tired of people's view of liberty changing depending on the political party in power.

Power. Bureaucratic inertia. Entrenched interests. Actionable intelligence. Apathy from the general public.

Seriously, why? What are you so afraid of that you feel it's necessary to expand federal power?

How do you think they found the three Paki IT guys? FISA. I wouldn't be surprised if the entire Senate Intelligence Committee had been FISA'd.
