The curvature and width of the river and the proximity to the new bridge kills any notion of a bridge north of Plaquemine.
Congestion on Hwy1 in Plaquemine will be a major deterrant if the town is not bypassed in some way en route to Bayou Goula. I do not see a Hwy1 expansion going over in Plaquemine, would kill off some blighted areas but would also tear into a major historic district that has already been hit hard by levee setbacks.
A bridge south of Plaquemine would be very costly.

Now that very well could be the issue for sure.
ETA
Although one would think that the WBR parish pres would have done the research on this issue before his proposal was put in the paper.....could be wrong though.

Uh, no, for 2 reasons.
1. Plant traffic needs to be diverted from as near the source as possible
2. It's a good location on the east adjacent bank to tie in with I-10 for a southern loop.
Bingo. People underestimate the volume of traffic coming from the plants and schools. That would remove at least 30% of the traffic through BR center.

If I can see that analytical data I could get on board with it.
ETA I still think it will be hard to get this through because you will have a hard time convincing John Q Public that this project benefits society as a whole.....although like I said that analytical data might help.

This actually isn't a bad idea. Going to require the demo of some houses though.
The Baton Rouge side would probably want this spot more than the Addis crossing. It's in Ibberville but it's still fairly close to the bridge and can link up with I-10 west of Baton Rouge in the future. LA 30 is the obvious link on the east side.
Plenty of room on the east side of a bridge for a big toll booth facility and Plaquemine can have a direct link to St. Gabriel.

look at where Sid Richardson Road hits the river road, zoom out and look at the width of the river in that spot.
Then look where you would end up on the east bank.

That's still going to make it really hard to eventually connect to I-12, but I think it would be just as good as a spur as a Bayou Goula crossing would be.

Best spot is around 74 and 30. Closer to in the middle of the new bridge and sunshine bridge. Diverts traffic from going into BR so it alleviates traffic.

That's not going to be easy either way.
I think the Plaquemine crossing mentioned in the article may be the best bet in terms of river width, position, and placement. Bayou Goula is too far down river.
This thing is likely going to depend on tolls, so the closer it can be to the I-10 crossing, the better.

No, it's not.
I think a loop to I-10 Iberville spur would be great for plant workers and could really help spur the West side of Iberville's growth as part of the BR Metro area, plus I could see a lot of people living in South BR and Prairieville using that loop around to avoid driving through BR proper.
If that could continue even further south and eventually cross over again (I know, two bridges, lot of $$$$) neat Modeste and connect to I-10 between 30 and 44, that could more easily continue north through Ascension and into Livingston up to I-12 between Walker and Satsuma, and at least be a southern half-loop with potential for a northern half in the future.

WBR and Iberville should split the difference, demand that the levees be restored around Sardine Point, and run the bridge from the SE of the point over to the east bank with an almost direct connection to hwy 30 at/around the University Club.
All of that dead land smack in the middle of the Greater Baton Rouge metropolitan area is an outright absurdity. Given proper protection from the river, that peninsula is ripe for amazing development that would benefit both parishes.
I'd almost venture to say that you could probably construct a channel at the neck of the peninsula creating an island while harnessing the power of the river for energy creation.

I'm not sure you understand how analytical data is supposed to be delivered....regardless what you suggested is asinine.
A) WTF would I want to do that
B) Why would I assume that every car exiting there between those hours is going to a plant?

Could but probably wouldn't. Audubon Bridge has done virtually nothing to grow New Roads. I know people in the those areas don't like hearing this, but they're not ever going to be boom towns. But even if that wasn't true, the location of a bridge should be based on where it makes the most difference. Anything further south than Plaquemine and the state may as well just dump 500 million dollars cash straight into the damn river. It's half the cost and just as effective.

Trust me. New Roads and St. Francisville do not want to be "boom towns".
They've been asking for a bridge since the 1960s and they got one in 2011. That's the difference between them and Baton Rouge. It's easier to organize and agree on a crossing point when you are dealing with two smaller communities that wanted to get rid of an old ferry.
