I think that top pic is Johnny Miller

OP...
hitting ball, then divot, is a byproduct of about three things done correctly
1. shifting your weight at the right time in your transition from the back to downswing onto a solid lead leg
2. turning your knees/hips to start the chain reaction making sure you clear room for your upper body to come through
3. keeping the head "behind" which produces lateral side bend, allowing the rest of the body to move forward before you begin to move the club with your upper body.
that's it, really. it's got nothing to do with address, holding lag, any of that bullshite. if you do the 3 things correctly i just said, it's almost physically impossible to hit behind the ball unless it's way too far forward. you don't ever have to think about trying to hit in front of the ball.
when this finally clicks and you get it right, your ball striking becomes instantly purer, less directional spin on your irons, and lower trajectory.

his set up is different from my own, but if you can incorporate the essentials he's teaching into your swing, you'll get the results you want.

During your next practice session, on your downswing, try to hit the ball w/ the butt (grip) of your club (i.e. base of left hand). Obviously it is impossible to do, but that action will ensure that your hands/club will be well ahead of the ball at impact.
That will do the trick & you will be hitting the ball more solid than ever!!!
You cannot hit the "tour striker" mentioned above w/o this tip.

hitting the ball with the butt end of the grip seems to be what a lot of top players do. I wonder if this is the feel most of them have?
When you make this move your hips automatically start clearing.
the only problem with this being your swing key is that you don't come over the top. You still have to pull the butt end of the club through the slot.

can GolfTec slow my swing down enough so I can see my hands clearly at impact?
This is what I want to see, my impact clearly defined in a picture.

I took a lesson out at CCLA and it gave me the sha**s for months!!! The pro there had me doing the punch drills but he wanted me coming way over the top trying to pull the ball to the left. He was doing this because my swing was so flat from the inside out that he said I had to get more vertical so he made me exaggerate it the other way. I tried his way and did some practice but it really screwed my swing up. I had the hossel coming into the ball first and more times than not...SHA**!!!
Now, I just play with my sweeping swing, post my 80-82 and move on to the 19th hole for beers and to talk some BS.

no offense, but please don't do this. this doesn't fix the problem. but it will have you shanking the ball in no time.

this dude gets it.
at no point in your swing, if done correctly, should you feel the need to pull the club. it's more of a push when you do what you're supposed to.

Are you saying at the point of beginning the downswing, there should be no pull with the left hand/ arm? It is a rh push?

I've got really good impact and shaft lean.
I am having really bad issues with swinging too hard and keeping a smooth tempo. I hit the hell out of the ball, but my back-swing over extends horribly.
I can correct it for a few shots, but it will get away from me and frick up my tempo and I'll lose a ball in the woods. I can't get to the point that my swing is shortened without consciously shortening it.

This drill looks to be great at helping you get your hands ahead. Stick an alignment rod in the end of a grip and swing without the rod hitting your thigh.
This does look like a useful drill. May have to try this one next time I'm at the range.

precisely. there should be a weight shift at the beginning of the downswing. your upper body should feel like it does absolutely nothing. but what happens in reality is you get a lateral side bend which effectively drops the club into the "slot." at this point you proceed to try to knock the shite out of the ball while keeping your head steady and not moving forward. essentially, an inclined baseball swing.
