Metallica has been trash ever since the LOAD days. It started with the black album too.
Cliff Burton was that entire band and any musician or casual music fan knows it. Metallica was better when they were abusing drugs like a motherfricker and getting hammered every day of the week.

yup. while a good record, it was the first evidence of clear transition from thrash metal to pop rock.
