Ehhh, it's an elected politician's "job" to protect himself politically as much as he can. That's not a value judgment type point (I'm not arguing it's necessarily inherently good), it's just a logical expected occurrence, no matter what side of the aisle we're talking about.

Yes it is. Any politician will try to sell that their version of the truth is the one you ought to listen to.
We, as citizens, have to sort out the competing claims. The media should be our allies in this (if not our surrogates). Instead they contribute to the problem.
