New Orleans Saints DT Nick Fairley has reportedly decided to test the free agent market this offseason. And he may draw serious interest from some of the teams with cap space.

He's going to go where he gets the most money. So he could def walk. I don't like the idea of paying him based on his history

I have no clue if we will be able to resign him or not, but there is absolutely no reason any player should ever not "test" free agency.

I'd say the odds are not in our favor.

I think someone will overpay him and he walks. Would hate to see him leave but hate it even more if we're the team overpaying him

Oh he will be a saint, he's gonna resign or play the season on a tag.

I'd rather not overpay for him. He was decent last year but he wasn't very consistent (just like everyone on defense minus Cam) and isn't worth big bucks.

How much should Saints pay to keep him?

Nick signed a 5 million contract with LA Rams in 2015. Last year he signed a deal with incentives was worth 4.5 million.
In all honesty, Nick out played his contract last year. Now part of that was the absence of Rankins for most of the year which meant more snaps for Nick. More chances to get sacks and tackles.
Fairley knew he had a great season and voided the extra year to be a free agent.
I will add that I know Nick is from Mobile and enjoyed staying close to family. I think his true value is around 5 million a year without an incentive contract. The key is if Fairley wants a 2-3 year deal.
I could feel good about a 2 year deal worth 9-10 million.

Fairley is looking to get one more big contract where ever that might be!!

He certainly deserves a big contract. We will regret letting him walk if he does. Pay him the 9M/yr and move on. We almost have a complete DL, we cannot upset the balance now. I agree Rankins looked pretty good, but that isn't enough of a reason to let Fairley walk. The kid wants to be in NOLA, there were quotes of him saying it earlier this year, he will stay if we give him a fair deal.

He had a great season and deserves to get paid. But, I'm not sure I'm okay overpaying for him. We have constantly overpaid for players and it doesn't work.
I look at the Patriots who never do it and they have five rings with a QB equal to ours in talent.
7-8 million a year is right at the edge I'd be uncomfortable with. 6.5 a year is where I hope we land. Over 8 million I say we let him walk we have two good young guys with onyamama looking solid at times and still a raw player.

We got him on that one year deal so he could get a big contract somewhere. I don't want us paying him based on that. While he played really well, I see an A. Haynesworth type future for him if he gets a big contract. Just IMO.

IIRC, the second year in the contract was a "dummy" year so that his cap hit could be spread over two years, meaning he didn't chose to void it.

Agree with the board that I'd love to have him back at a reasonable price, but may not be possible. You have a team in New England who just won a championship and showed interest in Fairley before we signed him. They also have one of the biggest caps in the league. I think it's either between N.O. and N.E. If he values winning a championship and money more than being close to family, I could see him jolting to N.E. in a heartbeat. Hopefully we get it done before it gets to that point, but I'd say it's 50/50 at best.

0% chance we tag him

You should research before you make bold statements like that.... Franchise Tag on a DT this year is $15.2MM thanks to Suh and Cox. Willing to pay him that based on his 1 good year??? No Thanks

Well since you put "might not resign" in your question I would think you might not get any disagreement on this
