Home Warranty

So, my heating/cooling guy says that the whole system is really old and won't last much longer. He quoted me $6,500 to replace the whole thing. I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to get a home warranty in the hopes that it will break while the warranty is in effect. Has anyone had any luck with this? Is this a stupid idea?

It's an idea. Don't expect them to be replacing $6500 though. They tend to cheaply replace each individual thing as it breaks and would take you several service calls to compete the work if everything was actually failing (minus all the exclusions they'll have)

In my non-expert experience the whole advantage of home warranties is when you're in an old/project type house and don't have the money on hand to pay for major repairs. I have a buddy who loves his. Since he's been in his home they've replaced his AC and his oven. He's not the type to save and he's not very concerned with quality. I think he's paying like $350 a year for the last 10 years.
