Why is the ATF still a thing?

Inspired from this article on the ATF's attempts to cut regulations: LINK
I would like to see a substantive response to this. How do the Feds have authority over alcohol and tobacco? And why is there an entire Federal department (and associated bureaucracy) whose sole intent is to infringe on a Constitutional amendment?

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is an unconstitutional agency. We don't have prohibition, I don't know where the central government claims constitutional authority over tobacco and they certainly have no business restricting or regulating arms per the Second Amendment.

I made a post about the very topic a while back. Why does this organization exist?
Even if it were legal, why would it not be under some other existing group like SS, Marshalls or FBI?

The ATF should have been abolished back when Reagan entered office.

Couldn't that easily be rolled into the FBI? After all, they are the entity charged with investigating explosions/terrorist attacks.

I guess to ensure nothing nefarious is happening behind the scenes such as spiking A and T with other chemicals?
I don't know, but I agree it needs to be eradicated. Whatever they do that actually IS constitutional could be shifted to other departments.

Because jackbooted government thugs need jobs.

Field Agents need to be absorbed to ICE, FBI, etc, and ALL administrative jobs done away with. Shut down ATF.

A lot of things fall under the umbrella of DHS now and work together. Personally I believe it is a way to have more people doing almost the same thing. More eyes and ears to investigate shite so to speak. Say what you wil about government fraud waste and abuse, but these agency work the shite out of their people and get shite done.

It will exist until someone can figure out how to avoid the "soft on crime" label that's always attached to these decisions.

As others have said, just assume those duties and agents under the umbrella of another alphabet agency.

Not sure they would qualify.

It's a Fed agency & the Fed never stops spending money on anything

Commerce Clause as bastardized by the post-New Deal Supreme Court.

The BATF does quite a lot of Law Enforcement work. They are the experts on issues related to firearms and bombs. Their expertise is very valuable to prosecutors.
I worked a case of a guy at a gun shop selling trigger assembly's to convert a Glock to full auto. They busted his arse. The guy was selling the kits under the counter to really sketchy people. People who you really don't want having full auto Glocks.
Their agents are actually some of the best ones to work with.
Keep in mind, if the gun industry goes unchecked and some catastrophe happens, it gives the anti gun crowd a better argument.

I don't think many disagree that the work they do is specialized and needed, it's just that they could be rolled into other agencies.
