How would one make a self watering system? I planted 3 tomato plants in plastic planters about the size of 5 gallon buckets and found it hard to regulate water last year (1 of 2 survived)

Thanks. The seeds I bought showed my part of Alabama you could plant in mid march to mid April but it has been too hot here.

Yep. This year the hot is a month ahead of schedule.

I planted a bunch of pot a couple weeks ago. It's coming along nicely

planted corn in a big container last Monday. its not perfectly aligned as i hoped but they have sprouted like crazy.
I did 3 corns for each hole. I planted them in a triangle about 2 inches apart. Then spaced out about 5 inches and planted 3 more in a triangle about 2 inches apart. we shall see how this turns out

Not sure if anyone could help or not but have an issue. Got a french drain put in. The grass that was put on top of it died and looks bad because it comes all the way to the front yard. Is there anyway to regrow this dead grass or would I have to get new sod? TIA.

Yep, my spring garden is running into my summer. Should still be in greens but my peppers/beans/maters are ready to go in.

Not to be a smartass, but what part of DEAD do you not understand?

Got all three phases planted and growing. 3 plantings of corn (silver queen, merit , & g-90) 3 plantings of beans (blue lake, and contender) 3 plantings of tomatoes (cherokee carbon, brandy boy, chef's choice, indigo rose, sun gold cherry, mr. strippey and celebrity). Peas, peppers, cucumbers, potatoes, yellow squash, zucchini, and spaghetti squash sprinkled in.
Planted some tricolor corn and pumpkins to see how those do.

Nice! How do you keep coons and squirrels out of your corn?
Posted on 4/25/17 at 8:12 pm to ChenierauTigre
Traps and .22LR, but i still lose some. I killed 4 opossums, 1 coon, and relocated 4 squirrels last year.
Squirrels seem to be worse than anything. I planted some deer corn last year in the garden and lost 25% to squirrels. They climb right up in the middle of the day and munch all they want.

Yep. Same problem here. Squirrels worse than anything. I kill 100+ per season and still can't put a dent in them.

Dang! Very nice! I wish I had the time and land for a garden like that.

From what I understand, you're going to have one next year.
Posted on 4/25/17 at 9:07 pm to ChenierauTigre
If I don't want to mow any grass next year I could make a garden that big.
Posted on 4/25/17 at 9:10 pm to PillageUrVillage
There ya go. You can't eat a yard. Mowing time saved = time for garden.
Posted on 4/25/17 at 9:12 pm to ChenierauTigre
Baby steps. Don't worry, I'm positive next years garden will be bigger.

Beautiful garden.
I am hoping to yield about 16 corn on the cobs with my first container. I planted them 1 week ago and they are taking off. I am about to drop some fertilizer tomorrow then cover with mulch. Going to plant some tomatoes and cucumbers in 5 gal buckets soon as well.
Honestly this board got me interested in trying this out. Got to start somewhere I suppose!

They will do well in buckets for a while. Once they get bigger and the soil becomes depleted, you will have to water and feed often. Just keep that in mind. Cucumbers especially are heavy feeders.

I was hoping the self watering system that u can build out of 2 buckets will help out some. I'm just doing it to see if I can yield stuff for a season. Learn the process and eventually start doing it in the ground. Nothing to crazy but the idea doing this is pretty awesome.
