Accidentally hit enter. My bad.

Anyway, little sister just got her school newsletter. Walker elementary, the top scoring elementary in the parish, scored a 48% on track rating. And a 52% need support rating on their standardised test scores...

How on earth is a 48% on track get an a rating. And how is that acceptable?

It's not acceptable. The state of Texas lowered passing on the math portion of the "state school rating test" to 38 percent and above.

It's called gaming the system and lyin' with figures, bro.

It's crazy. Here's the schools scores. And they act like it's a huge accomplishment. HEY GUYS WE'RE AWESOME! Less than half our kids are performing on a satisfactory basis yet were still number one!

This is why people send their kids to private schools

Oh I know. I went to olom for a while. When my parents moved out to walker, I was a good 2 grades ahead when I transfered to public school. I just can't believe they're touting these numbers as successful. Over half the kids are idiots, yet they have an A rating and one of the best elementary schools around. Sad

Because of the way the criteria are usually created. If all of the students in the state magically jumped to the on track status, then they would probably adjust the criteria so that higher scores are needed for that standard.

The tests are criterion-referenced (i.e., whatever level they are at), but they are usually created based on normative sampling. In other words, the tests rely on variability within the tests to accurately differentiate students; therefore, the criteria reflect this variability.

The problem isn't the school or the scores; the problem is that you clearly don't understand how the scores are created and criteria calculated, yet your assumption is that those kids are idiots.

When less than half of the kids are passing math or English at a BASIC level, yes. They are idiots. You have to be half brain dead to score basic.

Then they're dumb too?

If you're going to make kids take standardized test, then don't have less than half the kids not pass on a basic level and give them an A rating.
If 48% is regarded as an A in your class, something is fricked. Either you're all idiots, or the test is bullshite.

Again. I don't know how sound the tests are, but it's likely that neither of your conclusions are true.

It's like the 100 meter dash.

If a sprinter running a 11 second 100 meter sprint would be pretty fast for high school but very fast compared to the general population. He would also be very slow compared to current Olympic level sprinters but very fast compared to early Olympic level sprinters.

So when standards change over time or between reference groups, the "level" of that same sprinter with the same time changes; however, nothing about the objective speed of that sprinter changes.

I'm blunt. (Lol, blunt). I will call it like it is. 48% isn't a good grade. It isn't something to be proud of. It's insulting that they would try to say hey, half our kids are idiots and don't perform on a BASIC level, but they're gonna recieve an A.

No. That's failing. Either the kids are idiots or the test is a sham. One or the other.

A 48 is an A because the state average is a 33.

But it's not on a typical grading scale. Maybe they should use different names for the performance level to make it less confusing though.

You're missing the point. If all of the students in elementary school could solve differential equations, then only the students at Good Will Hunting's level would be above basic. The criteria are arbitrary and not really that informative.

Clearly you don't understand this. Your posts are below the basic level right now.

So minorities do slightly better than students with disabilities? Give that school more money and teachers higher salaries stat!
