Yes it does. And we have thus far because we adapt, while not artistically increasing the cost on that consumer.

Besides we've increased manufacturing productivity, output, and efficiency, while jobs have decreased. Why increase these costs for some jobs that are going to be increasingly marginalized by innovation and technology?

You sound like a guy who sees rigged officiating in a game, and simply responds that the losing team should have overcome the numerous bad calls. What I am saying is let's ensure the officiating is fair in the first place.

As a gargantuan importing market, the US has tremendous leverage over our trading partners. The threat (rather than implementation) of US imposed import barriers ought to be extremely influential bringing down international barriers. If not, relative damage to the other guy will almost certainly be worse than what we suffer.

That is the game!
