Boondock Saints opening scene question

The brothers are in church in the middle of the service, and they just walk up to the front, right past the priest who's preaching, pray, kiss Jesus' feet and walk out. The only person who thinks this behavior is out of the ordinary is one other priest who is about to stop them, but the priest next to him prevents him from doing so.
Why does no one even turn their heads to notice that they are interrupting the service? The priest who's speaking doesn't even make eye contact with them and they practically brush shoulders with him.
I've never understood the behavior in this scene. Can someone explain?

They're the guardian angels of the neighborhood, everyone knows them. I think. Been like fifteen years since I saw it.

Because poor man Tarantino Duffy thought it looked cool I suppose.

I always thought that the opening scene may have been in real time, and the rest of the movie was a flashback.
I.E. The opening scene showed that they were the guardian angels of the neighborhood and everyone knew it except for the priest (most likely visiting from another parish). The rest of the movie showed how they developed such a status.

They're Irish Catholics that have probably been going to that church since they were born. Baptized and confirmed there. Their parents probably did the same thing as parishioners and so the boys followed in their footsteps.
The old priest stopped the new priest from interrupting because it's a tradition with the brothers.
