Alright, I am 29 and obviously have no experience outside of reading and watching documentaries on this. Nixon won re-election in the biggest landslide ever...bigger than Reagan in 1984. Won every state but MA and won over 500 EVs. Watergate occurred in the months just prior to re-election, but the coverup lasted well over a year.

Taking out what is already known, if Nixon had just said his people perpetuated this wrong-doing in the very beginning, admitted apology, does he survive Watergate?

It still goes to show Nixon didn't do this. I do not understand, even after all this reading, why he took the route he chose. Was his paranoia that bad?!?!

maybe ... the people who orchestrated the break in would face consequences ... there was a lot more to watergate than the break in (not referring to the coverup) ... the other stuff was just as bad, if not more so, as the actual break in of the hq ... quite a bit of sabotage of meetings and speeches, coupled with some outright lying and false rumors ... but that was all the doing of the lower level people ... nixon could've bitten the bullet and thrown those people to the wolves, but he didn't ...

Who knows? The press was out for blood the same way they are out for Trump, that I can tell you.

Tough call on that one but probably not. People seemed to want to get him then.

all he needed to say was "I found out about the break in, robbery and planting listening devices on the news like everyone else". He would have skated from all trouble.

yes to first question

he was a dunce. he was leading in polls by 30 or 40%. the opponent had chosen an alcoholic who had had to go into a treatment center to be VP and had to come up with a substitute after the dem convention.

the whole thing, breaking in to find stuff on the Dems was unnecessary.

he was an awful person and people figured it out. there were still Republicans at the Federal Reserve where I was an analyst, who defended him after.
Ford pardoned him. damn.

Actually, Thomas Eagleton had been treated for severe depression, including a series of shock treatments. THAT's what derailed his VP candidacy. George McGovern, while a good man and good historian, was way too liberal.

If Nixon had fessed up at the beginning he would have survived. Instead, he could have done a misdirection with the press and keep them on Spiro Agnew's troubles that eventually led to his resignation as VP and Gerald Ford being picked and confirmed as VP.

No way would he have come clean because his personality disorder would have prevented it. Barry Goldwater said it better than I can.

quote:

Nixon was the most dishonest individual I have ever met in my life. He lied to his wife, his family, his friends, his colleagues in the Congress, lifetime members of his own political party, the American people and the world.

Here's my take.

1) He would not have survived. One of his own would have turned on him. He was guilty. The 18 minute tape gap is proof enough.

2) How stupid to break into the DNC headquarters while running against a loser like McGovern. He had a slam dunk reelection. Paranoid or not, Nixon is a loser for doing this.

3) Pardoned by Ford. How stupid. He should have prosecuted that loser. Nixon's BS coupled with Ford's neglect set up a veto proof Dem majority for Ford's last 2 years led to the incompetent Carter regime.

If only he had made use of the phrase "low level operatives acting on their own accord" he would have survived. subsequent administrations did not make the same mistake.

maybe

but

back then, citizens held elected officials more accountable

and he was a Republican

Hillary did far worse than ole Dick ever thought about doing AND the media & her supporters KNEW about enough of it to disqualify her from running

but free health care and republicans are racist - so run the old hag up the flagpole anyway!!!

Yes.

You have to factor in that in 1974 most Americans thought our Elected Government was good and didn't do things like break into the other Political Party's office.

Or,at least we wanted to believe that.

I was 13,so I didn't really know or care at the time.

No doubt. Nixon's problem came from his oversight of the cover up. Ironically, just as Hillary would prefer to climb a tree and lie rather than stand on the ground and tell the truth, the Nixon cover-up was inevitable. It is who the man was.

OTOH, in terms of would Nixon have survived, if Nixon was Democrat in politics today there is a 100% chance he'd serve out his full term. Dems would group together to block any chance of removal from office. Republicans would be blamed for attacking him. Such is the sad media enabled corruption in today's Congress.

He should have said he just learned of a break in at the DNC headquarters while watching the evening news.

Edit: Ah, someone beat me to the most obvious 2017 answer.

He most certainly would if he was a democrat, but if he was Woodward and Bernstein never wuld have been curious about the goings on in the first place

The deletion of 30k emails should be considered in the same light.

Both fall under the rules of Spoliation of evidence.
Which basically allows for inferring the evidence would have been detrimental to the Spoliator.
In most jurisdictions Spoliation is itself a Tort
