re: What's with the Disney World Obsession?

It's all so silly really. This thread comes up at least once every month or two. People flock to Gulf Shores, Destin, Ft. Walton, etc, every year and there's never a thread about "Beach Obsession." I don't get why it bothers people so much that Disney is the #1 vacation destination on the planet.

Have you read this thread? The rustling comes from those that hate Disney. Those of us that have enjoyed it don't care if you don't like it. Different strokes for different folks. However when they say that, you get responses either like yours above, or downvoted for having an open mind. Some people like Disney. Some people don't. And some are making uninformed opinions without having been there.

So basically, Disney got these people hooked on Disney World when they were 7 years old, and added mature attractions as time went on, which kept those people coming back as they grew up.
I would argue that anyone going to Disney year after year as an adult hasn't grown up or evolved much at all. It's a fake, plastic, overpriced theme park that serves as the perfect symbol of the shallowness and lack of depth of present day culture.

There it is. Like clockwork.

If it helps, I think doing this every year sounds just as miserable as Disney. I did the beach a lot in college because we'd get a cheap hotel and split the room 4 ways. Last year was the first time I've been convinced to go since college, and I almost fell out at the end when it ended up costing $1500 for condo, food, and drink.. for 3 nights.

honestly, going to any big tourist attraction every year seems silly to me
same beach, same ski resort, same theme park, etc
mix it up people

"Hate"
Who "hates" Disney? I find it odd that people my age with no kids would go... but hate?

I went to Disney on my honeymoon. We had a blast. There are plenty of things to do as adults. We got smashed in Epcot going around the world, went to Victoria and Alberts for dinner one night. Acted like kids the whole week. It was an absolute blast. And we went the week after New Years, so the crowd was very tame.

I have a teacher who is obsessed with Disney and it's pretty disgusting

We (wife and I, no pics, no kids) don't go every year but we have gone. We don't geek it out, but that vacation was a total blast.
We did not spend 5k to go to Disney. I guess if you went for a long trip it would be that much, but we covered the whole place in a short trip.
My wife has a medical issue that requires long flights be business class, which means most of those vacations would be way more for us. Also most of those I would want to do longer than we Disney.
FWIW we have a trip scheduled to Macchu Pichu so it isn't an either/or thing.
Not true. Between fast pass and the ability to go early and do late night (Magic Kingdom is open pat midnight some nights), you can really avoid the lines.
I think 15 or 20 minutes is the longest we waited on anything. We only did that like once. Also just don't go during peak times.
Don't go during peak times.
You don't go in summer. You are adults with no kids, why would you pick the worst time of year to visit?
True, but that is true of most tourist areas.
So you just don't like Disney related things.
I like the rides. The nostalgia was super fun. Day drinking at Disney is great. A clean rollercoaster is a godsend compared to basically every other amusement park.
There is some good food to be found if you pick carefully. Good short trip for people in the Gulf Coast area.
Parks are much less busy in February or early March and you can ride a shite ton of stuff.
Ultimately, though, if you don't like Disney you won't enjoy it.

A lot of Walmart millionaires in the world who think they're fancy taking pictures with Dumbo and Mickey every year.
Sad, really.

You are certainly bothered enough about it to start a thread on it. I'm 34 and i enjoyed it. It's nice, it's clean, and the lines aren't bad if you go the right time of the year and get fast passes. Now i wouldn't step foot in that place in the summer, but around Mardi Gras, or October-December is a good time to go. But like i said, i have a son that i'm bringing, but even if i didn't, after the last time i went, i'd consider going again.
FWIW, my last vacation was in Asheville and I would go back there again too. Maybe i just like vacationing in general!

Sure there are some cheap places. The kids and I have been to Disney a few times, but after the divorce I'm having a more difficult time of scraping together money but I'm working on it as they really want to go again. We used to go to places like Williamsburg every year (Veterans Day) and drop roughly the same once all is said and done.
While I have immensely enjoyed Disney (mostly watching the kids' reactions and enjoyment, but also for the Star Wars stuff), I would never go without the kids. Never. In my book, its all for them. My ex mother in law is one of those Disney fanatics, but then again she is seriously child-like herself.

If you've got no kids, go to Universal at least. The rides are a lot funner.

Yes. Anyone that simply questions why adults with no kids want to go to Disney every year is attacked with the fire of 9000 demons. Again, do what you want. I just think it's weird.

I think that's the part that gets me in these threads. Not all of us are confined to 1 vacation a year. We usually go to Disney sometime in the Fall or Spring then we take a summer trip somewhere. Last year we did Portland in July and we just did Disney for New Years. This summer we're going to Mackinac Island in Michigan. My wife has some family that just moved up there and after a few pics we decided to go check it out. They don't allow cars on the island and they're known for fudge. Count me in.
