1980. I was 9 and I took an interest in all sports all at once.
The one event that I remember as being my first "sports memory" was a play in the 1980 NLCS between the Astros and Phillies. It was a controversial play involving a disputed triple play that the Astros thought they had turned. Then I latched onto every sport I could find, mostly on radio. So I caught the end of the 1980 football season listening to John Ferguson. I also followed the Saints...that was the year they went 1-15. I'll never forget Archie beating the Jets 21-20 in the snow at Shea for their only win. Then, the first team that really captured my heart was that 1980-81 LSU Basketball team that went to the Final Four. It was awesome following that team all year. I've only shed tears twice after a sporting event: tears of sadness when Indiana beat LSU in the Final Four that year and tears of joy when the football team beat Oklahoma for the football championship that I thought I'd never live to see.

Tldr: 1980
