an AX15 is a manual. manuals are so much easier to rebuild than automatics. For one you only have one clutch disk, not 20-25.
You don't have bands, you don't have compressed springs with hundreds of pounds of force held in place by snap rings.

I think any shade tree could tackle a manual. Automatics are a beast.

It's a worthy challenge to try but it's not fun like rebuilding an engine or doing a head job.

Yea a manual doesn't require much special tools at all. An automatic required model-specific tooling to install pistons, spring packs, and shaft seals just for starters. It's a tough meticulous job and mechanical aptitude can't make up for not having the right tools. The tools tend to cost more than s rebuilt transmission.
