I am pretty sure the nuclear program is run by individual power company's and the US government oversees that program.

It's not 13,000 employees in the Energy Dept, it's 90,000! That's right 90,000 and their focus is not on the primary energy that powers this country, but on alternative energy sources and carbon emissions/tax credits.
I wish everyone could understand that oil companies are not in business to produce oil, but rather to make money! If there were money to be made in alternative energy sources, then oil companies would already be there!! This department can be cut!

Out in the Permian there is a nuclear waste disposal site that is run by private contractors. DOE has the biggest office building in town to house all of their employees that oversee the operation.
This is also the site that has been shut down for 3 years (in February) because of an explosion/leak.
