What about looking at his playcalling when he was at Tulsa in 2015? Here is a link to the Tulsa/OU game in early 2015...also includes plays from other games that season.

My guess is that he had to tailor the offense to account for a true freshman QB...this Tulsa footage looks very different...a lot more slants and medium routes.

I'm almost positive Gilbert did not call plays at Tulsa. I believe it was Philip Montgomery (OC under Briles who then went to Tulsa as HC). In fact, I believe this was the first year Gilbert called plays.
But you're right on the freshmen QB part - a FR QB who was injured the last half of the year and couldn't threaten deep. That hurt the offense more than anything else, since it's predicated on making the D at least account for the deep pass on every play.
