Can I get around out here with my iphone maps? Or is coverage shite?
Posted on 12/1/16 at 9:34 am to DirtyMikeandtheBoys
When I was learning the area I was able to use my phone tracking map. I didn't have cell service, but the GPS kept plotting my path.
Once you run the area a few times you won't need the map any more

That is all i ever really used out there. Just make sure you have the whole map loaded before hitting BSM.

Very little to zero ATT coverage.
Be careful cutting across through bakers and half moon, for whatever reason the deep channel has moved around a little bit.
Getting lost isn't the worst thing that can happen out there this time of year.

No coverage... Study a map before going.
If you and anyone you know has a garmin for vehicles, you can use it out there pretty well.

I always carry a handheld GPS even if the boat I'm on has one.

True that. Be careful going through Stump too.

Many a cooyon busting up lower units come winter time.
Quasi-related, do most folks running GTR's and the like out of BSM in the morning hunt private land? Or has everyone decided to ignore the air cooled restrictions, seems like I see the same amount now as I did prior to the ban. Not talking about 25 and lower longtails.

Most hunt private land. There are several private leases south of BSM, and a few along Loutre. There are still a few that run into the WMA itself with mud motors, but not nearly as many as there were. LDWF made an example out of a couple guys first split last year and it slowed down a bit.

Hunted those south of BSM before. Figured all that stuff on the right side of Loutre running to engineers canal and beyond is where they're headed once they get across MRGO. Agreed, I'm usually deep in the wma far from the leased areas within/adjacent to it when I make my hunts and still hear them running around every other hunt or so.

I rarely have service when fishing the Biloxi Marsh.
look at the map before going and screen shot the areas you think you will be going to so you will have it in your photos. obviously it won't show you your location but it's better than nothing

The hunting in the WMA itself has been outstanding so far this year. I've only hunted it twice personally but my friends have been doing great. I'd recommend waiting until the sun comes up to go.

Nah, not likely. I don't even know of too many Getting stuck isn't unlikely but depending on how stubborn you are it, can be a real bitch. I've slept out there before.
I would throw a gps in the boat just in case but as long as you don't stray too terribly far from the main canal, you can pretty much bounce from spot to spot without too much trouble.

Also, FWIW, the tide is low midday right now, so be mindful of that.

Been getting at or near limits most every trip, and agreed, no reason to ride the wave of terror that is the BSM Holeshot every morning at 4:00..God forbid but given time someone is going to get in a world of trouble out there one of these days.

Yeah we plan on launching at a time that allows us to pretty much see without a light once we get off the canals

Download the Navionics app for $10. You can download a large area (all of Southeast LA, Mississippi and Alabama if you want) so that it's on your phone and you don't need data service. It's also one of the most updated and detailed mapping services out there.
