That is actually the worst outcome for those of you who oppose citizens' rights to defend themselves.

That is NOT what the second Amendment is about.

The 2nd Amendment is for us to protect ourselves from the Federal Government.

It is one of the major accomplishments of the Left to actually get people to think it is about self protection.
This is why they now frame their argument as to "why does anyone need an Assault Rifle" for personal defense?

Both are incorrect views.

Again...

We have a 2nd Amendment to protect ourselves from an overreaching tyrannical Federal Government.
Self defense is ancillary to the fundamental right.

I would argue it's more corollary than ancillary.

You are right. The founders understood the ability to defend ones' life and liberty from individuals as a given. Their focus was on the right to also defend those things from a tyrannical government, which is why the 2A was written in the first place, as an additional (some would argue the primary) check on government overreach.

The right to individual self defense shouldn't even be a talking point; it should be accepted by everyone. Firearms are needed by citizens to keep the government from stepping on their throats.

Self-protection includes "protection from the government". That is implied.
