LSU isn't affected in that case but they force Texas to pay more. The other side of the coin is Texas refuses to pay and you get the coach. It is only complicated for incompetent, irrational people like Joe Alleva.

LSU was not getting Herman with the Texas job open. Period. He wanted to go to Texas and Texas wanted to hire him. I will ask again, If LSU 'forces' Texas to pay more for his services, how does that benefit LSU?

By fricking over Texas? And considering they could offer Aranda you would make giving Aranda big money less likely. Also, what if he flops? Would force Texas to pay for another buyout AGAIN.

None of this benefits LSU. None of it. Your hypothesis that Texas would have less money to pay Aranda is flawed. Texas ain't running out of money. Ever. If somebody doesn't come work for them it won't be because they couldn't pony up enough money.

Change that to Texas has billionaires and many, many, many, many multi-millionaires backing it.

It has already been explained. If Texas overpays so be it, LSU isn't impacted in any way, shape, or form. If they're forced into a negotiation maybe there is a small chance they botch it and LSU gets their guy.

But Joe Alleva is gutless and lacks vision. Some people are okay with that style of leadership that gave us the failures of the 90's and some people aren't. It is what it is.

ETA: Can I assume you believe we should withdraw our offer to Aranda since we're lowly LSU and not engage in a bidding war with Texas?

Not only would this not have happened (Texas would have paid more), but even if it did it means we would have vastly overpaid for Herman's ser
vices. Paying him more than Urban or Saban is insane.

Aranda is already here and has not expressed a keen interest in going to Texas (like Herman did). Nor has Texas targeted Aranda as primary hire. Additionally, the money people at Texas are not clammering for Aranda to be hired at any cost (like they did with Herman). Finally, Dave Aranda is a proven commodity at his position at the P5 level. Tom Herman is not. Having said that, there is a price at which you have to let Aranda go even if you can afford it. If Texas wants to offer him 3M a year to be a defensive coordinator, common sense dictates you have to let him go.

No one suggested LSU do this. If Texas countered and decided to be insane, so what?

An article today states they have.

So common sense says we can enter into a bidding war against Texas for a DC up to our max, or a reasonable amount, instead of just walking away from the table at the outset? That is a fascinating concept. I wonder why we couldn't do the same for a head coach.
