We keep forgetting that Coach Stovall was never the real choice for LSU football. He was this "stop gap" measure put in place by Paul Dietzel. He was never truly given any chance to succeed as in that time, assistant coaches were hired on 1 year contracts. All of his assistants until Coach Nix in '81 and Coach Brown and Coach Johnson in '82, were Bo Rein's staff. Plus, with all of the undermining of the Board of Sups and the school admin, it was nearly impossible for Coach Stovall to ever succeed. Don't forget that when Coach Stovall dismissed the DC, OC, and the LB coach, Timmy Byrd left to go to USM. With that, the QB position was squarely in the lap of Jeff Wickersham who would become a very good QB but not in his first year of starting. That's a big reason, plus the departure of some really talented Seniors is the reason the Tiges finished 4-7...
