I basically agree with you on these stats, but I have read some recent research that casts doubts on these numbers. I'll try to find a link. Basically, it's that the many small and rural communities didn't have the technology long ago to report crime stats to the FBI, so it brings all old crime stats into question. They were reportedly skewed by the big cities and areas with technology.
