Cool.
I loved the original shows. Another one that borrowed heavily from the groundbreaking work of Forbidden Planet.

Even though this isn't pure "stunt" casting, as she does have some chops and can pull off the kind of strange, off-center character that is Dr. Smith - it kind of takes away from the vibe to have these kinds of twists.
They couldn't find a dude to play Dr. Smith?

I remember like yesterday when the original first aired. It was the biggest thing on TV. The Robot (he was a B9) was the same robot used in a movie Forbidden Planet that most of us had already seen.
Angela Cartwright played Penny ... she had been made famous in Sound of Music and The Danny Thomas Show. She also had a sister in real life, Veronica Cartwright, who was made famous in another space movie ... Alien. (Witches of Eastwick as well.)

Love the Busy Bee Scene
Parker Posey is one of those actors that I feel like has been around forever quietly in the background.

There were some bumps and points for concern along the road but, taken as a whole, they did a fantastic job with this series.
The family dysfunction was painful to watch. I don't mean "painful" in an eye-rolling sarcastic manner. I mean it in that the TV Robinsons were the perfect 1950's family set in a 60's fantasy setting... and to see a version where the family is falling apart... it was difficult to watch.. I wanted Guy Williams and June Lockhart to show up and explain to this couple what it means to be a parent and to put your kids ahead of everything else.
After watching the entire nine hours you realize that this season was about taking a dysfunctional family and putting them through hell until they band together and become the legendary Robinsons. The payoffs come in the later episodes and it's worth the trip.
The character transformations are extremely well done. If you think that anyone is a Mary Sue or a stock villain, hang around through the later episodes. Those who think they know everything learn hard lessons. And some of the people that you despise might surprise you. Except for Dr. Smith. No matter what universe, Dr. Smith is always Dr. Smith.
To me, the effects were seamless. I'm fairly forgiving in this area, but I didn't see anything that jumped out as being poorly done. The Robot in particular was a joy to watch.
I'm sure that you can find SJW in the mix, if that what you enjoy railing about. But the women were as infuriatingly stupid as the men. You tend to wonder how any of these folks were picked to populate outer space. But then, the point seems to be for the audience to watch them all grow into their new responsibilities. And the whole deal with Judy being black... they don't force it down your throat. There's no big speech or very special episode. It's a minor point of casual conversation. As you'd expect in the real world.
As I said, it was hard to watch the early dysfunction. And the characters didn't share the same personality traits as the originals. The greed and humor of Dr. Smith is put on a different character, and it works. Will isn't the know-it-all bursting with confidence that was Bill Mumy, but the character builds his own momentum.
And the shoutouts and Easter eggs for the old fans are done so well and so subliminally, that it takes you a beat to realize that they're there. The obvious moments... the Robot speaking, the John Williams score... gave me chills.
I think that it'll do well with the general audiences. It's a bit brutal for very young kids, which is a departure from the original. But it's a great, solid fantasy series.
