I am almost finished with my first website that I hope to monetize down the road. I only have one or two competitors but I am ranking on page 6 or 7 on google depending on the keyword searched.
Anyone here know about this kind of stuff?

Are you looking to spend the money to put together a strategy to help you rank organically, or are you trying to do the work yourself and just want some advice?

I don't mind spending some money if it is reasonable. I have been reading about SEO and have decided it is not something I can learn in a week or two so I would pay for professional help.

My wife owns a growing digital marketing/strategy firm and might be able to point you in the direction of someone who could help you if you aren't a fit for her. I'm sure she would do a quick call with you for free and let you know what the cost is for the results you are hoping to achieve.
Shoot your contact to ithad2bme@gmail if you want her to give you a call.

I'm sure there are a lot of "tricks" that I don't know about, but the basics of SEO are to have quality, regularly-updated content, do some "word-of-mouth" via the internet to try to get some quality backlinks, and then wait. It can take a long time to place well in the organic results.
Short-term you need to place some google ads. They work, and if your content is good this will result in backlinks that will boost your organic results.
And whatever you do, don't try to game the system by posting spam links to your site on random message boards, or things like that. Your site will likely get buried.
Also, did you build the site yourself? It helps if your content is structured well, if certain tags are used (such as alt tags on images for screen readers), and also load times are becoming more of a factor, I think. You may need to pay for professional help with this.

If you are trying to do it yourself, read up on white hat vs black hat and stay away from black hat techniques.

You want your alt text to describe the image, but you also want to work in a keyword or two as well (but do it naturally, don't force it).
Make sure your keywords and phrases show up on your pages, but don't just keyword load. Make them appear in a naturally flowing organic text piece.
Be sure that all headings are nested properly(1 h1, then one or two h2s under that, then h3s under that, etc.)
Make sure the site is mobile friendly. If you can build it as responsive design, do it. Google is starting to indicate which sites are mobile friendly. I don't think that it really helps your ranking, but it is a good thing to have on the search result.
Use a site crawler (Screaming Frog is a good one) to index your site for page titles and meta tags. Page titles and the meta tagging areas (especially the description meta tag) have certain preferred lengths.
You can also use Google Search Console to see what searches are bringing the most people to your site. You can then tailor your meta tags and keywords to those keywords.

Remember though, having your alt tags and metadata tags fill out move you up the curve. Its really the content and what sites link to your's that shifts your curve. If you can have your site linked by industry leaders you will shoot up the list.

People smarter then me make a living off this but I've found good meta link descriptions with keywords, a good domain with keywords in the name and a well structured site will help a lot.
Make a Google business account and register your address, domain, phone number and set up Google Webmasters.
Link your domain to YouTube, Facebook, Yelp, etc.
