Literally everyone I graduated with that got a degree in geology (I personally do not) are looking for jobs in GIS, not geology. The best geology jobs require a phD

a masters, yes
phD doesn't hurt, but it isn't a requirement

Outside of academia, you are over qualified and will not be hired for nearly every geology job with a phD. Even larger companies don't want many phD people. M.Sc. is generally what the industry people look for.
