They may pay in more federal money but they eat a ton of resources in terms of water and power. The growth in population there has been cannibalizing their ability to grow food due to the use of water for the cities and the prioritization of "the environment" over projects that would help provide water over time. The NIMBY attitude on power has also made them dependent on other states, especially due to power-intensive industries like Silicon Valley setting up their server farms in California and browning out the rest of the state to keep them running.

Perhaps true, but those policies could be reevaluated. To act as if California is not a MASSIVE part of the US economy is fricking retarded. This thread is a Trumpkin circle jerk. I'll take my leave.

We have the worlds largest economy and we are 20 trillion in the hole. Things are great, don't worry.

My point is that they may have money and industry but it won't last without the resource base in order to continue them.

The state is a fricking desert and doesn't generate enough water to maintain its population without getting it piped in from elsewhere. Same with power.

People don't generally acknowledge how perilous the balance is between California being a world class economy and California being a wasteland.

Californians don't realize how quickly the entertainment industry will abandon them. . .Stifle them with more taxes and regulation and they'll bail.

We had it in Louisiana (albeit a small scale) for a little while until Bobby meddled too much. . . it was all due to the favorable tax situation

I don't care who you are or what you believe, you will go where the economics make the most sense for your business. . .Unfortunately when these people leave, they take their liberal ideas with them and ruin somewhere else.

I realize entertainment is only a small portion of California's economy, but it's just one example

Well sure, this is absolutely true.

That being said, I don't think its the point of the thread. The thread is more to insinuate that a lib state like California is a bunch of slackers etc. Its a dumb stereotype considering the amount of brain power centralized out there and the amount of economic output.

Large swaths of Silicon Valley could easily move to Austin, Denver, Seattle, or elsewhere.

Internet backbones would take a while to set up elsewhere but programming and other people-based businesses could easily relocate to any area with a solid tech base and a decent pool of university grads to pull from.

Hell, they could even go international and set up shop in India by going to where the cheap programmers are rather than bringing them here.

"Brain power" in Cali generally means Silicon Valley. It maintains that position at this time because there is no significant reason to disrupt the nexus of universities (Berkeley, Stanford, Cal Tech, etc), tech companies, and venture capitalists.

All three of those things are centered on money and people, both of which can move easily if and when it becomes necessary, unlike infrastructure.

Seattle, Austin, and Denver are all cities which could greatly benefit from Silicon Valley becoming less attractive to tech companies and investors.

It'd take less than a year, seriously. They day they left real-estate prices would fall off the map. And I'd venture to guess most folks that work for a living would leave and be replaced by snowflakes with student debt from their lib arts degree.

The good thing about them would be we could still visit Cali because they would be a open borders country

Well the only open boarder would be to the south (Mexico). We will just extend the southern wall to include California.
