I liked the place at Perkins Rowe for a while. They have decent tribute bands (not great but entertaining), nice rock and roll theme to the place, good beers on tap, etc. But recently they went from no cover for regular local bands to 5 bucks across the board, and also doubled the cover for tribute bands from 5 to 10 bucks cover. Add to that the fact that their drink prices are among the highest in town. Used to have bands play from 10pm or earlier to at least 1 AM, now advertising bands as 10 PM to 12 midnight. Last tribute band I saw played last song at 11:30, encore, was done at like 11:40. We got there at a little after 10 and left an hour and 45 minutes later, down almost 60 bucks between two people.
Now I've found out that they're taking over Roux House downtown and turning it into some kind of goofy theme bar, presumably with no live music. The new Lava Cantina will be where Lucy's Retired Surfer bar was and will be geared toward one-man acoustic type stuff.
None of this is giving me the warm fuzzies about live entertainment in Baton Rouge, particularly the rock and roll variety.
Sorry, had to vent.

Just go to Teddy's in Zachary. The music is much better there. Just be sure to bring your own womens.

Original Rock n Roll is rapidly running out of venues in BR because there's little to no demand for it.
Texas Club
The Varsity
Lava Cantina
Spanish Moon
Atomic Pop Shop
These are the only venues for original rock bands. Everyone else only books singer/songwriters and cover bands. With that said, the Texas Club and Lava Cantina very rarely book original acts that are local, and usually only as openers for has-beens.
There's not enough venues and not enough fans buying tickets. Baton Rouge people would rather dance to shitty DJ's or listen to cover bands while pounding daiquiris.

With a name like Lava Cantina, I´d expect as such.
