Civ 5 is my most played game ever so I'm pretty stoked for this.

As for warfare vs other options, it's depends on the civ you play and the situation of the game. Some viva are better for science, some for culture, etc. It all depends on how you play.

I always prefer either science civs or flexible civs where you can just adapt to what type of territory you start with.
