Converting reel-to-reel

I know nothing about reel-to-reel projectors, but someone told me the cheapest way to convert was to buy a projector, shoot it on a screen and record it with an HD camcorder.
What kind of projector would I need? I can't even figure out what kind of film I have. (8 mm, 16 mm, etc)

Wirecutter had an article about best scanning services a while back. Memories Renewed was their top choice. I ended up sending roughly 20 reels to them to transfer and they did a great job and were fairly fast too (though I wasn't in a rush).
