I think that's part of the point with him being the troll. He'said not who you would expect and shows how anyone can be a troll with the anonymity of the internet.

I heard a lot of people saying that Cartman is off, but you have to realize, Cartman have always been the foiled for the other side to be total dicks on issues the general public find offensive.
It just so happen in this day and age that's the Liberal Agenda. In acting like a true a-hole he is now spouting Liberal Nonsense and being Liberal. As such Liberals now love the current Southpark while the good side, I.E conservatives in this dog fight is the target of his attacks.
Note that in a complete role reversal, it is the Boys student body now who is taking up the unpopular opinions.
