That place has to be hiding some bruisers but I never hear much about any deer coming out of there. Is it heavily hunted? I know access is difficult and Katrina laid a lot of trees down making it difficult to get around. Anyone have any experience out there?

Saw a little baby deer crossing the road to the shooting range yesterday when I was leaving after 6pm.

WIld Boar attacks Slidell man in PR WMA
definitely a rare occurrence however anything is possible when you piss off a wild boar
I'd be more worried about snakes (moccasins) than hogs. One of the best $100 hunting investments I've made - snake boots
.

Back to deer though, is it heavily hunted, have a good size deer herd? I remember some years back when they pulled those 3 bucks out of the east pearl that got locked up and all were over 140 and one around 160 iirc.

IMO, your best oppty at shooting a quality buck in PR is using a boat and getting far away from people. You need to do lots of scouting after the season when the leaves are gone and you can walk the cypress/tupelo swamp bottoms. Bring your GPS and mark rubs, scrapes, trails, and high ridge lines.
those woods are HUGE and it's very easy to get disoriented and lost if you've never put the time in to scout. I would look at topo maps and study a particular area and learn it.
Sherburne is the same way, although not as intimidating. Both flood annually and the terrain changes from heavy rains and hurricanes.

Yes, and yes.

It is thick with hogs and tree rat hunters right now. Opening weekend sounded like a war zone. Bow Hunting is difficult, a friend missed 2 opening weekend due to arrow hitting brush. Primitive weapon season is a good time to get out there especially if you are as happy with a pig as you are a deer. Last year there was always somebody walking up on us or near us if we didn't use a boat. I've never had a bad confrontation out there and everyone I've come across was friendly.
Also, Lots of snakes. I think we saw 8 cottonmouths in one day this summer on the WMA.

It's a WMA in south Louisiana so yes it gets hunted hard

I was hoping the difficult access would keep the crowds away.

No such thing as difficult access to a coonass with a mud motor

True, is it possible to get alone if you get far up in some skinny water then do some walking?
