You can drag around some heavy shite with a half ton, especially with trailer brakes and 5th wheel.
New half tons are monsters compared to what they were even 10 years ago, much more so if you go back 20.
The advantage of an HD truck has nothing to do with horsepower. They're heavier and stiffer trucks with much more stopping power and less power density so they'll last longer doing it. I personally think you get about twice the vehicle for your money compared to a half ton.
