I'm thinking about hunting Tunica Hills this year. I'm not a avid hunter, more of a fisherman, and what hunting I do is on family land in the swamp(no deer). What do I need to know before going out there? Any tips? I researched the web and found that they have tent camping only and atv trails, how about stands?

Thanks in advance

Went out there for the first time today, the terrain is crazy, nothing like I've ever seen in louisiana. We hiked a fourwheeler trail and some trails off of those. Interesting place. Didn't find any rub's, found a few tracks, and more ticks than I know what to do with.

Also, if you're coming from Baton Rouge, the route that it takes you to get there is closed because the road is washed out, but you can go around it and still get into the place. I suggest a truck or a vehicle with all or 4 wheel drive if you go after it has rained.

I appreciate it. I've read the terrain is harsh to say the least, but I hear the deer are thick. I'll probably head out there in a couple weeks with my ATV to scout it out. I also hear the snakes are terrible till it gets colder. Which tract did you hit, north or south?

While not Tunica Hills specific I grew up in some identical terrain north of Natchez, find an intersection of several of the larger hollows that is well traveled and set up about 1/2 up the side of the ridge where you can see as far in as many directions as possible. The majority of hunters stay on top of the ridges and the deer travel right past them unseen.

This is thick steep terrain, DO NOT shoot anything not worth the effort of dragging up/out. If you want camp meat stay on top of a ridge and shoot a doe, shot placement is crucial, you need them to drop in their tracks.

Bring one of those sticky rollers for removing lint. We used them in PA to get ticks off dark clothing before they can get ya.

Been hunting Tunica since 1994. It can be rewarding with a lot of work. Do not believe it when people tell you it's got deer behind every tree. There is a nice population no doubt. I can promise though that when the pressure hits, you have to get off the grid. There is no " one " scenario to look for. Once you immerse yourself in there, it starts kind of making sense. But there are nothing is ever for certain there. One big clue: Don't come out of the woods too early!!!

Oh and as far as snakes and ticks, snakes are there somewhat but not falling out of trees and jumping out from behind stumps. The ticks on the other hand are unreal. Maybe world record status. Go to the camping section of a store. Buy permethrin and use on your clothing as directed. You are welcome!!!

This thread has been pretty spot on. When I saw the thread title, I immediately thought "hilly, ticks, compass and a paper map/gps"

definitely take a GPS. you can get really turned around in the terrain. I've heard that escapees from Angola have had a rough go in there.

I used to cruise timber in there once a week, and would get lost. You walk down one finger into a bottom, turn around to walk back up it, and will walk up the wrong one. Pretty easy to do

I was wondering if that was normal, because I sat down in my car and looked down and sure enough 4 or 5 of them. I was blown away. Is there a reason there are so many ticks in this area? Iv been hunting my whole life and may of had 2 ticks on me.

Wear lace-ups, tuck your pants into them, and spray off on the pants and boots. I decided to do that after I came home with 13 on me one day. That completely stopped my problem.

Doesn't happen anywhere else though

I was. That was one of the best parts of my life. If I could do it still and make good money, I would. Dream job (minus the being broke part)

A good friend of mine hunts in there pretty often. He said the wardens are pretty thick too. He got stopped in his truck because his tires were too big. Got a ticket. The next day he comes in his wifes carolla. He parked it kind of on the road and was apparently making it less easy for people to pass. Got a ticket for that as well.

You can get a ticket on a WMA because your tires are too big?

Had a billy bug infestation in my truck. Hundreds. They look just like a tick but can fly. Harmless. Was ready to set fire to the ford. apparently they get together and have huge orgies.
