Though they do not publish subscriber counts anymore, they did state yesterday that over the last week they have had the highest concurrent user counts they have seen in several years.
If nothing else, they did a good job of generating positive buzz leading into the release.

Overal I think there are definitely signs that they fixed some of the issues from the previous expansions. The storyline actually feels like it matters. No more Panda bullshite or random time travel/dimension hopping. The Legion is here to frick shite up, fight them. Also actually killing off some big lore figures has made this feel real in a way MoP and WoD didn't.
The world quests are a nice balance between daily content and splurge content (you can do one per day or knock out all three every three days), which gives you flexibility in how you play. The Companion App should streamline a lot of the mission stuff.
The world feels alive at the moment and professions are actually more interesting than just picking the cheapest item and making it until you max rank.
Still the big failure of WoD was the first (and second,m and third) content patches, so let's see how this goes.

good for blizzard. if they release adequate content patches, the numbers will remain high.
minor side note, but I believe there's power in a name. burning crusade was a great name, wrath of the lich king was a great name, legion is a great name. cataclysm is decent, mists of pandaria sucks, warlords of draenor is ok but lacking. if the name of an expansion is any indication of success, legion at least has that going for it.
not to mention blizzard has a lot riding on this expansion to draw people back after previous expansions haven't done so well.
