Frats is just buying friends, and usually not very good ones.
Unless you are in a fraternity or tried one out and have had a bad experience, people on the outside looking in always make this statement with nothing to back it up.
I for one joined a fraternity and had an awesome experience, and the money isn't paying for friends, it's paying for social events and parties and tailgates. All of which non fraternity guys try to sneak into.
I can understand contempt towards fraternities if you tried one and the guys of that chapter were huge dicks to you but if you haven't tried it or atleast rushed, then you really have zero room to talk.

You should try AGR.
Not many options as an upperclassman.

some of them seem like good friends to me. I have noticed that some of them are not good people at all though
As someone in an LSU fraternity, I'm going to tell you straight up that half the chapters will cut you based on age alone before you walk into their house. The ones that won't cut you are shite and aren't going to have the social schedule and other events that you are seeking. It would honestly be a waste of money at this point.

They'll never admit it, but they say this shite out of jealousy. No, I don't think I'm better than you, but I know there are a frickton of guys on campus that secretly despise us out of nothing other than illogical hatred.
Edit: The is not directed at the post quoted, but rather the post he was replying to.

I never understood the negative aspect of buying temporary "friends" that some posters like to bring up every time one of these threads are started. I lived the fraternity life. I'm several years removed from college, and yet a solid 30 of us have never lost touch with each other and still get together on a regular basis with our wives/girlfriends.

Okay, thank you for real advice. Idk why age is such an issue. I can be chill and I like drinking and sports.
This was a thing I feared. I did a bit of research and the "lower tier" ones really didnt have that many good looking girls and not even a house. This would be the main reason I join besides bros, which are girls. So youre telling me the lowest tier one wont have any girls? shite
Im alson not white, so that hurts my chances too. I know

Space Marine, don't listen to this nerd. He's probably in Delta Chi or Pike. Both of those frats have plenty of girls, he's just trying to keep them all to himself.

Coming from a small town and being a naturally introverted person, I knew I was going to need some help meeting people or I was going to sit in my dorm room for four years. Being in a fraternity helped me break out of my shell. It wasn't perfect, not everybody becomes best buds for life, and if you have 80-100 people all in one place, you're not going to get along with some of them. That's a fact, all the bs rhetoric about brotherhood notwithstanding. But, like you say, I made a core group of lifelong friends.

I never said they don't get girls. All chapters get girls. I said their social schedules and other shite won't be as strong as the larger, better chapters.
Space Marine, age will hurt you much more than race. You'd be shocked at how accepting LSU Greeks have gotten just in the few years I've been there. Don't worry about race, just deal with the age issue.

I'm not saying the chapters are going all out to recruit minorities, but many of them have minorities now and the rest of the chapters are being kept all-white by just a handful of members. That mindset is quickly sailing.

I want some fun though before I leave . Im bored. Dues are expensive , ill give you that.

Start your own frat. You just have to win the Fraternity Games at the end of the year! Watch out for the Alpha Beta's though, they are bullies.

It really isnt. I lived in the house. Paid like 2400 total a semester. That covered room, electricity, 3 meals a day (weekdays), plus all the social events (bands, parties, etc.).
After I moved out, I paid 500 a month in rent ($1500 a semester basically) and that didn't cover any utilities, food, etc.. It may be a little more expensive, but not by a lot.

You should definitely go A Phi A. Those guys have kick arse music at their kick arse parties. I hear they haze like a mofo but once you're in you're in 4 Life, bro
