I just want to make my stance clear. My opinion is that people who live off the system are a plague to the rest of society. I would like to see all their free shite taken away... sink or swim, work or starve.
I'm not romanticizing, envying, or any of that. I loathe them and wish they all would die.
Just wanted to make myself clear.

Touché.
People can believe what they want about my personal feelings on all of this, but I'm genuinely sorry for all of the losses. I've got immediately family members who were affected. I was in a boat getting family out of a house with a foot of water inside and no flood insurance on Friday, so to say I sympathize with everyone is an understatement. It is tragic, and I hope people are made whole and given every bit of help they need and deserve.
I also hope it helps change the hardline stance this board often takes when other people encounter personal or regional emergencies, but I guess only time will tell.

but relying on FEMA is/was preventable
I wasn't going to chime in, until I read this. My uncle works for a government agency, I wont say which one- but he does not make a lot of money. Id say around 12 dollars an hour. Very hard working man, but nothing more than a high school education. His wife works at home keeping kids. They own a small trailer in Central. Lost everything they had worked 40+ years for. Didn't have flood insurance, because they couldn't afford it. The man has excellent credit, never missed a car note, or house note. But still needs FEMA. So, don't tell me that needing assistance in a disaster is avoidable.

Your uncle with the excellent credit, did he get FEMA assistance?

I'm sure there are tons of stories very similar to this one. These are the people I feel for. They TRY to do the right thing... work hard, pay their bills, pay taxes and they're the ones that get fricked over while the leeches keep on leeching.

He hasn't had his inspection. My guess is that the trailer is a total loss. We will have to wait and see.

Best wishes to your family.

Thank you. He is a very good man. He drives a dependable but not fancy truck, worked hard to pay for a modest place to live, lived within his means his whole life- and its all gone now.

This is what we are thinking with my parents trailer. The cost to repair it not worth how much you can get a new or used trailer for(that has no flood damage).
I've been keeping in contact with a couple posters that had family in the same trailer park as my parents....one of them just texted me saying her inlaws' trailer soaked up water like a sponge and when they were cleaning it up...her hand actually went through a wall cause it was so soft from all the water soaked up in it.
We are still waiting on an inspection as well for my parents' trailer. I hope your uncle is able to qualify for as much as possible with FEMA.

There is really no way to respond to this without sounding like a dick so I'll just let it go. Sorry to hear about your uncle but hopefully he is able to get the help he and assistance he now needs.

food stamps
Make sure they have applied for emergency food stamps.
Also...everyone that has been affected needs to be taking multivitamins or something to boost their vitamin C intake. The stress of all this is gonna wreck havoc on your immune system and make you easily susceptible to getting sick. Also...if you are so stressed out...you likely are not eating well either and need to get your nutrients another way.

I mean this with all sincerity - can you imagine how screwed they would be without whatever aid they're able to get from FEMA? They'll get housing aid, possibly a grant for personal items or a low-interest loan for personal items and whatever else needs to be done to their home, and maybe more help down the road. It still may not be enough, but at least it is something.
Edited to reflect your edit.
